What is Barytes

Barytes is a naturally found form of Barium Sulphate [BaSO4]. It is also known as Barite or Barites. The mineral is characteristically dense, purer grades having specific gravity as high as 4.32 g.cm-3. In its pure form Barytes is white though imputies such as Iron, Strontium, Lead and mineral impurites such as clay cause the Barytes to appear brown, red, yellow or gray. The other key criterium for choice of grade is the particle size. Precipitated Barium Sulphate, Blanc Fixe, is the finest, then a range of micronised grades of natural Barytes with finally the most coarse “mesh” grades of Barytes.

Choice of Barytes Grade

  • White Barytes

  • High purity Barytes grades are also white in appearance. These two properties give rise to a range of applications, from surface coatings to plastics. These are available as a range of micronised grades of natural Barytes with finally the most coarse “mesh” grades of Barytes. Learn more about White Barytes

Barytes is used in brick and aggregate in a range of applications such as high density concrete for nuclear shielding, the most important property of Barytes in this application is its density.
