Richard Baker Harrison Ltd are the UK and Irish agents and distributor for a range of high quality Gilsonite products produced by the American Gilsonite Company (AGC). The American Gilsonite Company is based in Bonanza Utah the USA and has been mining Gilsonite since 1888. Gilsonite is the registered trade mark of the American Gilsonite Company. Gilsonite is a none hazardous naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin that is similar in appearance to coal or hard asphalt. It may also be referred to as an asphaltum, uintaite or uintahite. The product is marketed under the Gilsonite trade name and Richard Baker Harrison Ltd are ISO 9001-2000 SGS registered.
Richard Baker Harrison Ltd market these products to three important application sectors . These are the Printing Ink and Paint Industries the Foundry Sector and the Chemical Products Sector. In each sector particular grades of Gilsonite may be used however some over lap between which grades can be used may occur The different grades are screened for impurities dried to a controlled moisture content and classified according to particle size. The material may be shipped directly from the mine to the customer or alternatively from Richard Baker Harrison’s UK warehouses Material can be supplied in 25 kg bags and 1000 kg big bags.
Ink and Paints Sector
AGCs refined Gilsonite Resin called ER 125 is widely used as a primary carbon black wetting agent for black news inks , heat set and gravure inks. The ER 125 resin competes against other hydrocarbon resins phenolic resins and metal resonates in this field of application however the ER 125 resin is found to improve the rub off characteristics and give superior gloss and tack properties. Special grades of Gilsonite Selects are also used in this application area and they are available in both the lump and pulverised forms. The grades most commonly used are ER 125 resin and Selects 300.
Foundry Sector
The Gilsonite is combined with the coal and other ingredients as a additive in the foundry sand to insure that the quality of the moulded part is improved thus improving the mould release characteristics and the subsequent final quality of the casting The grades most commonly used are Gilsonite Foundry grade and Gilsonite GPA grade.
Chemical Products Sector
This sector includes the Binder and Coating Industries, the Metallurgical Industries, wood products and refractory industries. The application areas are very diverse. Gilsonite is also sold as a Bitumen modifier and in the oil well industries as part of the drilling mud formulation. . A number of special grades are available for these application areas,
