GLASS MICROSPHERES
Richard Baker Harrison Ltd. is the distributor for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland for filler applications of Microperl glass microspheres produced by Sovitec SA, a major European producer of glass microspheres with its headquarters and manufacturing plant in Fleurus, Belgium and other manufacturing plants in France, Spain and Germany.
Microperl glass microspheres are translucent solid glass beads with a smooth surface and having the appearance of a fine white powder. They are usually coated with a coupling agent which optimises bonding between Microperl and resin or polymer. The average particle size can be as low as 20 microns.
Advantages of Microperl Glass Microspheres in Thermoplastics
Very low oil absorption
“Ball bearing” effect in mixing, leading to reduced viscosity and improved production speed Isotropic and controlled shrinkage, giving improved dimensional stability.
Advantages of Microperl Glass Microspheres in Epoxy and Polyester Resins
Very low oil absorption
Reduced viscosity, or lower resin content at equivalent viscosity Improved flow Easier elimination of air bubbles
Microperl Surface Treatment
The following surface treatments are available.
- Coupling Agent Type 215 – recommended for polyamide, polypropylene, polycarbonate, epoxy, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde
- Coupling Agent Type 216 – recommended for PBT, SAN
- Coupling Agent Type 217 – recommended for ABS, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyester, acrylic
