Clinoptilolite is a natural type of Zeolite equipped with a “cage like” structure and high Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), making it incredibly efficient in attracting and trapping positively charged ions.
These properties enable Zeolite to be used as a beneficial health ingredient when added to some animal feeds. It can also be used as a beneficial aid when used within pollution control and water purification processes; and it has water and nutrient-retaining properties as a turf-care application for use on bowling greens, football pitches and golf courses.

With a water retention capacity of 25-40%, Zeolite significantly increases the water holding capacity of soil. When improving the CEC it also reduces fertiliser escape and increases the ability of the root zone to retain desirable nutrients, these changes promote a healthier environment for turf growth which is key to a range of sports surfaces including – football pitches, golf, croquet and bowling greens.
Zeolite improves the water and nutrient holding capacity of soil making it an effective fertiliser additive and soil conditioner. By minimizing fertiliser discharge into surrounding water bodies zeolite also offers a means of minimizing damage to the surrounding environment.
Zeolite acts as a litter conditioner in livestock production. Where urea is produced ammonia results from its breakdown by aerobic bacteria which can have significant and detrimental effects on poultry health. Zeolite binds to ammonia and other contaminants removing their toxic effect; lowering the risk of disease and reducing the mortality rate. By simultaneously adding zeolite to the feed (see above), improved nutrient uptake reduces the presence of nitrates in excrement and minimizes the levels of decomposition.
Filtration – Swimming Pool, Waste Water and Aquarium Filters
Zeolite is applied to filtration systems to promote the removal of toxic cations. Within fisheries and aquarium applications zeolite is used as an ammonia binder inhibiting algal build up.
Typical applications include swimming pool, municipal waste water and aquaculture filters.
Zeolite can be applied to chemical and biological spills to encapsulate any waste. By applying zeolite around the edge and on top of the spill, the product is contained, preventing further dispersion, and can be collected using a shovel or brush.
Through cation exchange Zeolite can be used to immobilise heavy metals and other contaminants in environmental remediation projects. It can be incorporated into the soil to form treatment zones or added as an injectable slurry.
