RBH committed to Responsible Care program

Responsible Care

RBH is pleased to announce our success in committing to the RBA’s Responsible Care (RC) program. RC is the chemical industry’s commitment to continual improvement in health, safety and environmental performance. It is a global initiative. In the UK, Responsible Care covers the whole of the chemical supply chain – from manufacturers, through to distributors and logistics companies. Compliance with Responsible Care is mandatory for all CBA member companies involved in the trading, distribution, handling, movement and storage of chemicals.

Since 1993, CBA has measured the chemical distribution sector’s performance. This is a unique and valuable record illustrating the industry’s year-on-year progress.

Indices of Performance

Member companies are required to provide Indices of Performance covering key aspects of their health, safety and environmental performance. Since 1993, this data has been collected annually, aggregated and published as the distributor Indices of Performance Bulletin. It aims to provide CBA members and their employees, local communities, regulators and other industry stakeholders with a benchmark against which to measure the sector’s year-on-year performance.

Mark BrooksMark Brooks, RBH’s quality manager says “this provides us with a real roadmap with which to evaluate and improve our business over the coming couple of years”.

We are pleased to announce our cooperation with Broadview Technologies Inc. of New Jersey. The  company is a U.S. based chemical supply company established in 1970. Broadview is a leader in material science, providing innovative solutions to performance problems.

RBH will be handling sales of the Broadview range of Dianhydrides in Europe. They are primarily used in composites as epoxy curing agents, but also find application  in specialised powder coating formulations.

RBH joins the Chemical Business Association

RBH is pleased to announce that the company has joined the Chemical Business Association.

Managing Director, Graham Ellis comments, “We welcome the support and guidance that the Association offers to independent, forward thinking chemical distribuors”.

CBA membership is yet another way that we fulfil our aim of meeting and exceeding both regulatory and commercial needs.

Cosmetics industry gears up to produce gifts for the Christmas market

Despite the warm summer weather we are enjoying currently, this is also the time of year when the cosmetics industry begins to gear itself up to produce gifts and box-sets for the Christmas market. Naturally, these will include body powders, dusting powders and colour cosmetics, all of which will require sterilised talc grades of the highest whiteness and purity. It means we are kept busy ensuring that we maintain higher than normal stock levels of those high quality talc grades that our customers and their markets always demand from us at this time

Industrial Minerals Magazine “Trading Faces” feature

Recently Industrial Minerals Magazine, www.indmin.com , interviewed me for their monthly “Trading Faces” feature. It was an interesting exercise in that it forced me to consider the key issues facing the company over the coming years. It’s a long time since I asked myself “What is the role of a minerals distributor?”  I fervently believe that the product alone is simply not the be all and end all. Our customers want on time deliveries, reliable quality and a supplier that is well informed, that they have confidence in. All at a competitive price. It is RBH goal to meet these objectives, every time.

Magnesia board, a more environmentally friendly version of the traditional gypsum board

Exciting new developments are taking place in the field of “wallboards”, also known as “plasterboard”. Magnesia board, a more environmentally friendly version of the traditional gypsum board has long been used in Asia. Magnesia board has advantages of fire resistance, strength, water resistance and acoustic insulation.

RBH are investigating the potential for this “new to Europe” construction product.

Environmentally friendly Cellulose Fibres

The issue regarding environmentally friendly products is becoming more significant  and the impact of this on the environment and the respective carbon footprint is something that customers are taking into consideration when they decide upon which raw materials to use.

Richard Baker Harrison are becoming more aware of this  and  one of the products they market is  a range of Cellulose Fibres produced by  the Cellulose Fibre Fabrik (CFF)  based in Gehren Germany. These products are marketed under the Trade names Technocel and Topcel.  The products are derived from natural renewable resources and find applications such as Building Chemicals and Road Construction. Cellulose Fibres  offer a range of improvements to Plasters and Renders:  Adhesives: Filling Compounds; Bitumen based Products and Emulsion Paints. Just think that when you walk around the local DIY store that may of the products on the shelves  could incorporate this renewable resource.  On the way home the  road surface may have been laid using a product referred to as Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA). SMA  is a product which contains Cellulose fibre to prevent binder drainage in the Bitumen. It has a longer road life before it needs relaying and as such  offers a substantial saving in relaying costs  and hence  offers a lower carbon footprint.

Cellulose Fibres under the Trade name of Topcel  and Technocel contribute towards a better environment for us all and Richard Baker Harrison Ltd  are always seeking products which can help in this aspect.
