UK Concrete Show 2026: A Defining Shift Towards Controlled, Low-Carbon Concrete

The clearest takeaway from the UK Concrete Show 2026 is that concrete formulation is becoming more complex. Success now hinges on controlling that complexity. The industry is firmly committed to lower-carbon systems: reduced clinker, higher SCM use, and tighter water ratios are standard practice. While these changes cut carbon, they increase instability in fresh concrete.

The real challenge is not improving strength, it is rheology control.

Producers report that achieving target strength is rarely the issue. The challenge lies in maintaining consistency, stability, and usability in sensitive, low-water, SCM-rich mixes. Small variations in materials or processing now cause segregation, inconsistent flow, poor pumpability, and batch-to-batch variability. Many modern systems fail not in design, but in execution.

Rheology is the primary challenge.

Rheology control has overtaken strength (and traditional workability adjustments) as the key performance lever. Flowability under shear, particle suspension, spraying, placing,and finishing. Without effective rheology control, the practical benefits of low-carbon formulations cannot be realised.
