Bone Black – Organic Black Pigment

Carbon based black pigment and functional material derived from calcined animal bone, used in ceramics, coatings and polishing applications.
CAS NUMBER: 8021-99-6
Names Bone Black | Animal Char | Calcined Bone Carbon
Chemical formula Ca3(PO4)2

Product Overview

Bone black is a carbon based material produced by the controlled calcination of animal bone in an oxygen-limited environment. The resulting product consists of finely divided carbon supported on a calcium phosphate matrix, giving bone black its characteristic deep black colour and functional properties.

In ceramic applications, bone black is used as a colouring agent and functional additive, contributing to colour development and surface characteristics. In coatings, it functions as a black pigment where natural carbon based materials are specified. Bone black is also used in polishing and abrasive formulations, where its fine particle structure supports controlled surface finishing.

Bone black is selected where a naturally derived black pigment or carbon based functional material is required.
